Humbling Experience

This morning I woke up with my usual routine...look up at the ceiling and ask God how come one of our kids had to wake up at 6:30am, stagger out to the living room with child in hand and then grab the morning paper. I enjoy reading the paper each morning. There is almost always material to blog about and the opinion section is guaranteed to provide controversy conversation with Amanda. Saturday's paper was different. I rarely read the "She Says" section, but today an article caught my eye (see link below).

Nicole Phillips did a piece about learning patience and kindness will pay off. The beginning of the article is about finding your faults within yourself by asking others. This challenge would be very difficult in my mind. Can't imagine going up to a friend or family and asking them how they think I should alter my life. I already know the answers, but it would be so hard to hear it first hand. As the article continues she comes to a letter a mom wrote to Nicole. The letter states how the mother was shopping with three very young children and she could sense a large embarrassing scene developing. As a dad with two children who ventures to Wal Mart as well, I could emphasize. The mom successfully made it to the check out only to be surprised by a generous action. The customer behind her paid for her groceries. An act rarely known and definitely not recognized.

You may be thinking, what's the point to this blog? Well after I read this article this morning I was disgusted. I couldn't believe what I just read. You see, I know of Nicole Phillps. She used to co-anchor with my uncle, Austen Schauer, with Fox News at 9. Nicole stepped down from Fox after her husband, Saul Phillips, was promoted to the head coach position of the NDSU Men's basketball team. I am assuming a lot of this, but the timeline seems to fit. Saul Phillips does well as the head coach. He makes a good living and when I read the article, I skipped the middle portion. I didn't read the section introducing the letter Nicole received from the mom. Here I thought Nicole received free groceries!! I complained to my wife and even was considering writing a letter to the Forum BUT patience endure and I was humbled. I went back to reread the article. You see I was so frustrated, that I wanted to make sure I had all details. Low and behold, by reading the full article I got all the details.

So here is the point. First, read through articles, assignments, emails and etc. You could be missing very important information and second, chill out. So what if Nicole received free groceries. Probably not fair considering her husband's career, but so what. It's not my place to judge. Actually if it were true the lady offering to pay for the groceries probably deserved the criticism.

Thank you to the kind lady for helping the mom at the grocery store. You are an amazing person and you kindness will not go unrecognized. God is watching and takes care of his children. Also thank you to Nicole for spreading the word. The people of this country need to hear more good stories.
